Tomatoes! I didn't think I'd get any fruit this year, because my thumb is not the greenest. I'm so excited! I think I'll have some peppers too. I really need to fertilize these plants though.

I could crop it, maybe make it black & white and put it in a pink frame to match my bathroom.

One year ago, on July 15th little Frasier came into my life! It was a difficult time, as I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out 2 days before. He made my sleep difficult those first few months, as I lived in a bachelor apartment and didn't have a bedroom door to keep him out. But I love him so much. He still gives me kisses, lets me snuggle him, rub his belly, gives me daily heart attacks, and lots add lots of laughs. He's the greatest kitty a girl could want. Plus we match!

Here's three photos that his foster mom took before he came to live with me.

Your result for The Commonly Confused Words Test...

Advanced

You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

I'm sure people who live in really hot climates think this is nothing. But dammit, I'm not built for humidity! I already have been having a crappy couple of weeks, in which I got nothing done, now I have a lot to do in a short period of time, having less than a week to do these things before I leave town, and am on my period. GRRRRRR.

Besides, it's still only June.

I want to do a 365 project this year, starting on my birthday. I tried it last year but gave up after a few days. I didn't like taking a photo of myself each day. So much easier to take photos of different things. Besides, who wants to look at my mug for 365 days? :P There are some different themes to follow a long, or I could just be random.

I kind of want to get Frasier a harness and take him outside. I feel so bad keeping him in all day. I know he really wants out. Even if I just let him play on the lawn out front. He could meet some neighbourhood kitties and doggies. Or get scared shitless. My street is pretty quiet though. My only concern is the harness breaking and him getting away, or that he would get hurt. Plus I don't know if the super would like it if he pooped on the lawn. Some of the neighbourhood kitties hang around here though, so they might poop on the lawn already. The house next door has a chat that was tied to the front step. He was cute and watched me as I walked past. He was like a guard cat.

God, I can't wait until Friday.

The weekend sucked. I don't really want to talk about it. I didn't go to Multifest. At least I saved money.

Norwegian Adventure - Day 8

So as I said in my last post, the overnight train got stuck in a tunnel just outside Oslo. We were over an hour late. Marte had to rush off to work, and I was left to fend for myself. I'm really not good at navigating without a guide or a map. I have no sense of direction, even though things were familiar to me. I did make it home though, eventually.

I probably should have showered and gone to sleep right away (I didn't sleep on the train, though I tried to), but I didn't. I know I had something to eat, and I think I downloaded my pictures from Bergen to their laptop. I ate some chips and had some sleepy tea, eventually going to bed.

Marte came home around lunch and slept for a bit also. I don't know what time I eventually got out of bed, but it was way later than I meant to get up. Whatever. I was on vacation dammit! :P

We had something to eat and slurped back some coffee. I think we left the apartment around 3ish.

Our goal was to visit the National Gallery, which is free (yay!) We of course were not allowed to take pictures. I got to see The Scream, The Madonna. There are many Norwegian born artists there, as well as others, such as Picasso. I really liked the Christian Krohg paintings.

Title: In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
Author: Michael Pollan
ISBN: 9781594201455
Read: 06/11/08 - 06/17/08

Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants. These are the famous opening words of In Defense of Food in which author Michael Pollan takes a critical look at the Western diet and food industry. Essentially the Western diet is killing us. We no longer eat food. We eat nutrients or imitation food. Marketing, food science and government regulations does nothing but confuse consumers. We no longer know what is good for us. We've lost touch with real, honest to goodness food, and getting sicker, and fatter in the process. I knew this before I read the book, but now I know how it came to be. Pollan describes how the western world came to be this way. There's a lot of scientific talk, which frankly, made my eyes glaze over. However, this isn't just the opinion of some dude. He backs it up with research and studies (includes an extensive bibliography).

The parts you really need to know are in the third section. Eat Food. Not too Much. Mostly Plants. All that is explained and I'm going to summarize it here because I think it's really important.

I think I'll read Naked Lunch next, because for one thing, I need some fiction. I have 100 Mile Diet out too, but it's due back Saturday and it has holds on it. I doubt I'd finish it in time. I started reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon after I picked up A Breath of Snow and Ashes at a booksale without realizing it's part of a series. I started reading it on my way back from Norway and I was like "What? Wait a minute!"  So I put it down and thought maybe I should start from the beginning :P

I'd like to get a lot of reading done over vacation. Hopefully the black flies won't be so bad so I can read outside, but that is doubtful. My parents need one of those net tent things that you can sit in and eat a meal or whatever. But my parents rarely ever hang out outside, mostly just do yard work.

On this morning we did better time wise getting out of bed, but I think I let Marte get up first to shower so I could sleep in ;) We discussed out plans for the day. There were other things I wanted to do in Bergen, but being kind of tired and lazy, and having already spent a lot of money, I decided to take it easy this day.

After breakfast we walked downtown again, this time stopping at the University of Bergen. We went to see the Cultural History Collections as part of the Bergen Museum. This museum features an exhibition from the "Viking Era", Norwegian church art and Russian icons, an exhibit on Indian - Inuit - Aleut (that was cheesy), and "Eternal Life" - Egyptian Mummies (creepy).

If I wasn't so lazy I wouldn't have so much to do at once. But I know if I can get all this done I will feel really good.

TO DO:

  • wash dishes
  • shower (that should probably be first eh?)
  • make bed
  • laundry
  • vacuum
  • mop
  • tidy
  • empty compost, garbage, recycling
  • clean litter box
  • write letter to penpal (a new thing I'm doing)
  • apply for jobs
  • water plants

Title: A Brief History of Anxiety: Yours and Mine
Author: Patricia Pearson
ISBN: 9780679314981
Read: 06/08/2008 - 06/11/2008

The granddaughter of Lester B. Pearson, Patricia Pearson takes a look at the history of anxiety but also reveals intimate details about her own struggle with anxiety. She differentiates between depression and anxiety, discussing the different ways people deal with anxiety around the world. It was very interesting to learn that in countries where there is a lot of turmoil there aren't high rates of anxiety. The US has the highest rates of reported anxiety. Pearson is critical of western medicine's prevalence of using anti-depressants to treat anxiety. I liked this book and I think I will read more of her work in the future (she's also kind of funny).

Sometimes I wonder if I missed my calling as a psychologist.

Can I make a slideshow of vacation photos, burn them to a cd, creating a VCD and play them on my mom's dvd? I don't have a DVD burner. It doesn't have to be fancy. We had arrived in Bergen around 11pm the night before, had supper (this yummy home fries and sausage thing you get in a bag and then fry up, plus eggs). Marte's friend Catrina picked us up at the train station. There was a lot of traffic due to an airport worker strike. The train station was a lot busier than normal.

Catrina and her partner Lars-Morten live in a great apartment with two cats (Remus and Romulus). The cats are kind of anti-social around strangers, but I did get some pets and scritches in. We slept on the pull-out couch, which was pretty comfortable, and of course slept in the next morning. I am good at ignoring alarms, alright?

Marte made us cappuccinos on their espresso machine and we ate our breakfast on the enclosed balcony. We had a gorgeous view, as you can see.

Title: The Shipping News
Author: Annie Proulx
ISBN: 0671510053
Read: 06/01/08 - 06/08/08

This book was alright I guess. I'm not from Newfoundland, but even I can tell that this woman does Newfounlanders wrong. Proulx makes the people out to be a bunch of inbred, violent, criminals. Some of the stories within the story were entertaining. I did like the joke about the knitting truck driver. Other than that, it's not a remarkable story. As my friend Karen says, Proulx should stick to writing about gay cowboys.

Now I'm doing to fix me a snack and chose my next book.

- A Brief History of Anxiety: Yours & Mine, Patricia Pearson
- Abarat, Clive Barker
- The 100 Mile Diet : A Year of Local Eating, Alisa Smith & J.B. MacKinnon
- Naked Lunch, William S. Burroughs
- In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan

Plus I have these two cookbooks:

- The Food & Cooking of Norway
- Cooking the Norwegian Way

I'm looking for a recipe for the meal I had at Penguin. It was a mac and cheese with fish. It didn't sound appetizing at first, but it was delicious!

Procrastination and Caffeine

Well I'm doing ok with giving up caffeine. I haven't had any since last Saturday. It's probably easier for me since I'm not addicted to coffee, but I do miss my daily green tea.

The procrastination thing is not going so well. I was supposed to do a bunch of cleaning last Wednesday. I haven't done any. Today I didn't get out of bed until 1pm. The cat was being lazy too. I came out to the living room, waited for the computer to boot, then sat on the couch with the tv on. The cat joined me for a while and I just sat there, rubbing his belly.

Sleeping that much as the negative effect of making me really tired and sore. I always end up sleeping funny when I sleep in. My back and neck are hurting and I have a headache.

I'm going to take a shower, have some breakfast lunch afternoon snack, and see if I can salvage this day.

Tuesday I got up again and went out on my own for a bit. I still slept in but not as late as I did on Monday. I wasn't feeling as nervous this day, as I took the same tram I did before and got off at the same stop.

I went to Akershus Fortress down near City Hall. Work on this fortress and castle began in 1209. It has survived many attacks. You can view the grounds for free during the day. I didn't quite know how to get in, so I just started walking along a board walk, which provided me with some more great views.

I came across this neat sculpture. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm still trying to piece together the parts of my trip.

On this day I had to get up and go out by myself. I set my alarm for 7:30am but I ignored it and went back to sleep. I got up before 10, and felt extremely ill about going out by myself, even though it was a very simple task. I knew I had to go out, but it took me a few hours to get around to it. It was noon when I left the apartment.

I didn't have any trouble getting the tame and finding where I needed to go. I got my Oslo pass at a tourist bureau near City Hall. City Hall is actually quite impressive, and I did hang around for a few minutes to take a few photos. Continue reading Norwegian Adventure - Day 4 )

Sunday we slept in again and didn't quite get the big breakfast we had planned (we meant to have that on the 17th, but we slept in then too). Still, we managed to have bacon, eggs, toast and juice. Marte and I went out to three flea markets.

The first we visited was Grunneløkka, nearest to Marte and Vegard's apartment. It started to rain just as we got there, but only for a few minutes. Here I bought a little doll in Norwegian dress for only 20 kr, and an embroidered wall hanging. There was a lot of neat stuff to look at, including a lot of glass ware.

Saturday was May 17th, Norway's Constitution Day. We slept in too late though, and missed the children's parades and the King waving at the royale palace (we watched it on tv though, does that count?) A lot of people get dressed up on the 17th, in either fancy dress or traditional clothes. A lot of men and women where wearing bunads.

After breakfast, we went out for a walk around and to meet up with Marte's friend Nina (or Nina #1). We walked over to the royal palace, where there werel still quite a few people milling about.
